Welcome change: The UBDT College of Engineering in Davangere.
The UBDT College of Engineering here has been brought under Visvesvaraya Technological University, Belgaum, said A.H. Shivayogiswamy, Chief Whip in the Legislative Council. He noted that the Government had issued an order to this effect on February 24.
This college, the first ever government engineering college, was under Mysore University in the beginning. Later it was brought under Kuvempu University. After the formation of Davangere University, the college was brought under it.
Talking to presspersons here on Tuesday, Mr. Shivayogiswamy said that with this, the longstanding demand of students, and teaching and non-teaching staff of the college had been fulfilled. With the inclusion of the college in the VTU, more attention could be expected for the college. Most of the perennial problems such as shortage of teaching staff and inadequate infrastructure would now be solved, he said.
The college at present offers seven undergraduate courses and eight postgraduate courses. There are over 1,800 students in the college.
Revanasiddappa, principal of the college, said degrees obtained by students of the college would hereafter be recognised outside the State as well.
He noted that students pursuing higher education would also be benefitted by this development. Many students of the college too have expressed joy over the inclusion of the UBDT college in the VTU. Pavan, Prasanna Kumar, Panikumar and Sridhar, student leaders of the college, who had led the agitations to bring pressure on the Government, said that students of the college would hereafter get better recognition. Industries, IT and BT companies, which had had reservations over the quality of technical training being given at the college, would now change their mindset.
