Bidar: Renovation work on the Chandni Chabutra or “the platform for moonlit nights” is nearing completion. It will be thrown open to the public during the Bidar Utsav in February.
The Chandni Chabutra, a raised structure on the eastern side of the Bidar Fort, was built by Aurangzeb's governor Hamiduddin Khan in 1661. The platform offers a majestic view of the full moon over the Manjra river valley behind the fort. The structure remained neglected for years before the district administration took up the task of repairing and restoring it. Workers first cleared the entire area of shrubs and garbage. Then the platform was cleaned and levelled. A solid lime mortar base was discovered when workers dug up the ground before the dome. They also found an octagonal shaped pond below the main dome on the platform lined with coloured tiles and fixed with pipes. The dome was repaired and replastered using lime and mortar of the same quality. It has been painted in sundried lime and mud-bathed to give it an aged look.
A staircase has been built to reach the dome from the fort base.
“The Chandni Chabutra will serve as the venue for some cultural programmes during the Bidar Utsav,” Deputy Commissioner Sameer Shukla said.
