The District Implementation Committee of the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) on Wednesday gave its approval to the action plan of Rs. 93.70 crore for 2010–11.
The meeting chaired by Cooperation Minister Lakshman S. Savadi, who is also chairman of the District Implementation Committee of the SSA, took stock of the progress of various works taken up with funds provided under the SSA and directed the officials to complete all pending works.
A major part of the funds provided in the action plan of the SSA this year went towards the salaries of teachers working in government schools. This year, Rs, 42.90 crore out of the total Rs. 93.70 crore has been earmarked for payment of salaries and the remaining for the development of infrastructure.
A sum of Rs. 29.93 crore has been set aside for civil works at schools while Rs. 3.97 crore has been provided for the construction of extra classrooms. The meeting also approved the proposal for constructing 301 toilets exclusively for girl students in the district at a cost of Rs. 72.25 lakh.
Approval was given for providing infrastructure in four new schools sanctioned by the Government, at a cost of Rs. 34 lakh. The Education Department officials told the Minister that they could not supply textbooks in all government schools as the stock meant for Gulbarga district was wrongly sent to Hassan and Mandya districts. The stock was being re-diverted to Gulbarga district.
The officials said that in private schools the problem was more severe due to the failure of the managements to communicate their requirements in time and send the demand draft. Of the total 500 private schools, only 20 had provided details of their requirement and paid the money.
