Karnataka’s Neeravari Nigam Ltd, a division of Water Resources Dept has selected India’s biggest Micro Irrigation Company and agriculture conglomerate, Jain Irrigation Systems Ltd for the prestigious Shiggaon Micro Irrigation project through the National Competitive Bidding.
This integrated Micro Irrigation project involves survey, design, planning, supply and execution. The project involves formation of co-operative societies of water users in convenient blocks. The project also involves distribution system which uses the piping
network and further installation of on-farm micro-irrigation on 9900 hectares of the command area. It also includes providing power transmission network.

The company would also be maintaining the entire project for 2 years after commissioning and shall train all the farmers. The uniqueness of the project lies in the concept of lift (conduit transportation of water cum micro irrigation along with use of most lasting piping namely HDPE) resulting in a first of its kind project in the country for substantially improving water use efficiency in canal command areas compared to traditional open canal method.
Considering the consistent depletion of water level in the country and the much desired need for better water use efficiency, Shiggaon Micro Irrigation project shall be a major breakthrough in adoption of Micro Irrigation along with modern irrigation distribution networks in the command areas. This project involves command area of 30 villages of Haveri district and will benefit 5000 farmers and shall see completion by end 2012.The total cost of the project is Rs 1683 mn.
