HAVERI : Pedestrians, who had to dodge vehicles on the main road from KPTCL- cross to town police station, can now heave a sigh of relief. The road will soon be widened and will get a footpath too, by the end of March. The public works department has taken up a major work on the main road, aimed at easing congestion.

In the absence of a footpath, people had a harrowing experience walking on the road. Even vehicle riders had a tough time, owing to trees and electric poles spread haphazardly on the road. Now, with the initiative taken by the public works department, the longstanding public demand is being met in two ways. The main road has now got wide tunnels to allow smooth passage of municipal sewage, and above the tunnels, a footpath is being constructed with granite stones.

The main road is being widened by cutting trees and shifting electric poles. The work will be completed at an estimated cost of Rs 4 crore, said PWD engineer Shivanna.
